New Town Schools honor Veterans

By Edna Sailor
It was a crowded New Town High School cafeteria with children of all ages supporting veterans and their families.
A veterans song rendered by the Little Shell Drum ushered in the veteran procession to begin the evening. Additional songs included a flag song and a victory song. Audience members joined the honor guard in a round dance. Rusty Deserly, American Legion Post 290, played taps as his contribution to honor veterans. Superintendent, Marc Bluestone welcomed the crowd to the school.  He noted that this is the eighth year the school has held the event. Delvin Driver Sr. delivered the prayer in his native Hidatsa language.
Dr. Monica Mayer, newly elected Representative of the North Segment spoke briefly to the crowd. She noted that she is the first woman to be elected to the North Segment Council.
“Lately we have been through some good times and some bad. But I want to say to our veterans, God Bless you. God Bless our Eagles, God Bless New Town, God Bless North Segment, God Bless the Three Affiliated Tribes, God Bless North Dakota and God Bless America,” she said.
