Police force taking shape

The City of New Town continues to take baby steps toward establishing its own police force. But city officials say they would like to run rather than proceed one small step at a time.
At a special meeting Monday, council members were updated on progress of creating a self-sustaining law enforcement agency, facility and jail by acting Police Chief Art Walgren.
Walgren had a laundry list of things for the council to consider. The chief admitted New Town law enforcement is a ways off from performing at full service. Budget work is underway. The council heard a temporary office space could be a FEMA trailer, but no additional trailers are available.
The current recycle building could be used as a stopgap measure for the time being.
“I think we could finish that off … have three offices in there in a heartbeat,” Alderman Darrell Salter reasoned.
Space issue must be dealt with as well. Walgren said there are so many things that need to be considered, including how to house inmates.
