The New Town Eagles ended their 2010-2011 season with a third place finish at the State “B” Boys Basketball Tournament in Minot. The Eagles appearance in the state tournament was their first in 30 years. With that tournament concluding the basketball year, the Eagles lost seven players to graduation and have one returning starter in Preston Smith.
The Eagles began their 2011-2012 season with three games at home to start the year. The Kenmare Honkers traveled to the Northern Lights Building on Friday evening to tip-off the season. After leading by just four points in the first quarter (16-12), the Eagles went into halftime with a 10 point lead (33-23). Despite being outscored by just two points in the third quarter (11-13), the Eagles had a tremendous fourth quarter as they put up 21 points to the Honker’s 15 as they started their season at 1-0. TEAM TOTALS: SCORING- Smith 24, Myles Young Wolf 18, Wayne Fox 10, Nelson White Tail 6, Wes Aubol 3, Camron Grady 2, Jaydon Morris 2 REBOUNDING- 24, White Tail 10
Saturday afternoon’s game against the Divide County Maroons looked like it would be more of a test for the Eagles as they started off trailing from a 0-10 run from the Maroons. The Eagles closed out the quarter with a run of their own and found themselves ahead by one point (13-12). The Eagles went into halftime with a 30-24 lead. The Eagles held a 45-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. Much like the game against the Honkers, the Eagles put up more than 20 points to outscore the Maroons 26-9 for their second win of the year 71-47.
