New Town takes fourth in 37th

annual wrestling tournament

Despite the bad weather conditions the 37th annual New Town Wrestling Tournament was held in the Northern Lights Building last Saturday with
the New Town Eagles placing fourth.

Velva/Garrison/Max dominated the 10-team tournament, garnering 249 points to claim the team title. Rugby placed second with 144, followed by Belcourt 143, New Town 128, Ryan 124, Harvey 120.5, Minot JV 103, Kennmare-Tioga86, andStanley 26.

New Town wrestling brothers Justin and Jeremy Grinnell each nabbed championships at125 pounds and 135 pounds. Jess Hall also made the championship finals and finished second at 119 pounds. Others placing forthe Eagles were third-place winners Jace Uran at 160 and Eric Danks at 215, Alex Monk fourth at 130 and Rod Dragswolf sixth.

Also wrestling and not placing were Nate Monk at 103, McCrae Danks at 145, Ivan Wilson 171, Jacob Mills 171 and Slade Stringer at 189.

"All-State wrestlers Jeremy and Justin " had a good tournament, winning their weight classes without much of a problem," said New Town head
wrestling coach Terry Mathson. "Justin is 7-0 and Jeremy is 7-1 on the year. Jess Hall had the tournament’s biggest upset of the day with a 7-6 win over
Garrett Thompson of Rugby. Thompson was second at State B Tournament last year. Hall is 9-2 on the season, with his only losses to Thompson, and another second-place winner Ben Maliske of Beulah."

Jace Uran (9-5) and Eric Danks (12-2) have also been steady performers so far, according to Mathson. Danks has only lost ton state placers so far and has moved to heavyweight a few times in dual meets and given the team some big wins.

"We had two wrestlers not able to compete in the tournament which prevented us from pplacing second as a team," Mathson said. "Jesse Bear (140 pounds) had to attend a funeral of a family member and Billy Hall
(4-0) failed to make weight. Bear usually places and and Hall had a chance to win his division.
