Tigers maul Region 8 foes

By Jerry W. Kram
The Trenton Tigers successfully defended their Region 8 Girls Basketball Tournament title Thursday, downing the Kenmare Honkers 45-29.
In the first quarter the Tigers had trouble containing the Honkers balanced attack. No Honker had more than four points in the first half, but every starter scored. The Tigers found themselves down 12-9 as the first quarter buzzer sounded. In the second quarter, the Tigers defense clamped down and squeezed the Honkers for the rest of the game. Kenmare was only able to manage 17 points over three quarters for the rest of the game.
Senior Kaity Hove made her presence felt with 17 points to lead all scorers in the game. Alyssa St. Pierre added 11. Kenmare’s leading scorer was Brenna Stroklund with 10.
Trenton kept grinding away at the Honkers and took the lead at halftime 19-18. The Tigers scored 13 in each of the last two quarters versus the Honkers 11 points for the entire second half.
Tigers Head Coach Bob Turcotte was named Region 8 Coach of the Year and Hove was named Senior Athlete of the Year. Trenton will face the Shiloh Christian SkyHawks in the first round of the North Dakota State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament on Thursday.
