Wildcats are headed to state
The Lewis & Clark Wildcats are headed to state.
The Wildcats won the Region 7 championship Tuesday, May 29 in Makoti, defeating Des Lacs-Burlington 7-3. The last time the Wildcats won the championship was in 1980 - 32 years ago.
The N.D. State B Baseball tournament begins today (Thursday) in Jamestown with the Wildcats playing at approximately 7:30 p.m. Their opponent will be Region 1 champ Kindred/Richaland.
Other area teams also made the cut, including Washburn-Wilton Center Stanton and Beulah. Bottineau will open the tournament against Washburn-Wilton-Center Stanton. Hatton-Northwood squares off against Grafton in the other afternoon contest. In the evening bracket, Beulah takes on Carrington, while the Wildcats close out day one action.
In the championship game, Adam Birdsall and Chandler Karna lead the team to victory with an excellent pitching performance. Rock solid defense was shown by the Wildcats as they had only one error throughout the game.
The outfield showed great hustle and speed catching fly balls and returning line drives. The infield showed great strength with their quick reflexes and bullet like throws to first base. The Wildcats had great team work when catcher Tristan Gray picked off a runner stealing third, and another runner stealing second.
The Wildcats had a double play when 2nd baseman Aarontin Schenfisch caught a solid hit off second base then turned a double play to first base. The team showed no mercy as they battled through every out and every inning leaving their opponents stranded on bases.
The offense was powerful at the bat as Chandler Karna hit a base hit, then was aggressive stealing bases as he continued to steal second, third and home to score. Tyler Fjeldahl and Brandin Langan both hit a single home run.
